Smartphones with two cameras on the rear are nothing new. The HTC One M8 from 2014 had dual rear facing cameras and HTC also used to use dual sensors on the Evo 3D. If a new patent from Apple is anything to go by, iPhones of the future could also have a pair of snappers on the rear. The patent is called Small Form Factor Telephoto Camera and it was published this week by the US Patent and Trademark Office.
The patent describes how a pair of sensors could be placed into a portable device so that better photos can be taken and describes the sensors as a normal to wide-angle, similar to the current iPhone camera, coupled with a small format telephoto lens. The system would have a track length of a maximum of 6mm with a focal length of 7mm. The telephoto ratio would be between 0.74 and 1.0. In order to be classed as a telephoto lens system, it must have a TTL/f of 1.0 or lower.
The Cupertino Company also describes systems that could make use of an aperture stop or an adjustable iris, which would mean users, could change the focal ratios from 2.4 all the way up to 10.0. The system would be somewhat similar to the current iPhone camera with multiple lens elements that would be made from a variety of materials, including glass and plastic. The pixels would be 1.2 microns or less in size.
New and Improved Camera :

Every year, Apple makes some kind of change to the iPhone camera, given that it is probably one of the largest selling points of the device. They already own a whole load of patents relating to camera technologies and this one’s nothing out of the ordinary. They describe in the patent a number of lens surfaces that could be used, along with curvatures and magnifications and they even go into optical prescriptions, light spectrums and chromatic aberrations.
Whether this, or any of their previous camera patents, will ever make it onto a future iPhone is another thing but we already had rumor of a dual camera system on the iPhone 6, which proved to be false and no doubt the same rumors will appear again for the iPhone 7.
