20 Hidden iOS 7 Features your Didnt Know

The official version of iOS 7 has only been live for a few days but already downloads are far exceeding what was expected. Those of you that have managed to get past the problems with Apple’s servers are no doubt busy exploring what the new firmware has to offer. We are going to look at the Top 20 Features that you may not have come across yet and are perhaps not as well-known.

1. See your Tweets and Links in one place :

If you want to see, at a glance, all of your Tweets with links or URLS in them, simply launch Safari and tap on Bookmarks – the icon looks like an open book. Tap on the @ button and all Tweets with links will be displayed. You must be signed into Twitter otherwise this won’t work. To sign into Twitter , go to Settings > Twitter See the image below for detailed instructions .

  1. Launch Safari browser on your phone .ios 7 bookmarks

2. Enable/Disable Parallax

If you are not happy with the Parallax effect on your wallpaper or are worried that they are using your battery life too quickly, you can turn them off:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap on General
  3. Tap on Accessibility
  4. Tap Reduce Motion reduce motion ios 7
  5. Tap to turn the Parallax effect off or on again

 Turn on Motion Sensing

A brand new feature to iOS 7 is the ability to launch Siri or tap on the Home button just by moving your head. This is because of the inclusion of an additional processor – the M7 Motion Control co-processor. To set it up:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap General
  3. Tap Accessibility
  4. Tap Switch Control switch control ios 7
  5. Now tap on Switches and set up your personal preferences

Change Font or Size or turn Bold on and off

The font on OS 7 is quite thin but, if you don’t like it you can change the size of it or make it bold:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap General
  3. For Bold – tap on Accessibility, Bold Text
  4. For Changing the Font Size – Tap on Text Size and change it to what suits you best ios 7 text size change

Frequently Visited Places Displayed on a Map

If you have Frequent Places turned on, iOS 7 will be tracking your movements and pulling out information about where you go. You can have all of this information displayed on a map so you can see where you’ve been:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Privacy
  3. Tap Location Services
  4. Tap System Services
  5. Tap Frequent Locations and set up frequent locations ios 7

Block Callers and Unwanted Messages

Up until now, the only people that could do this were those with jailbroken devices. iOS 7 lets you block any caller or message sender:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Messages
  3. Tap Blocked – this will allow you to see all blocked messages and senders, including those from FaceTime and iMessage. ios 7 block caller unknown (1)

To block a contact, tap on the contact name to open it and, at the bottom of the screen, tap on Block This Caller. That wills top all contact from that particular person.

Time-stamps on Messages

To see time-stamps on messages, simply open up a specific conversation and swipe the screen, right to left – don’t remove your finger from the screen. This will display a time-stamp on each sent and received message.

Use Siri for controlling System Toggles

Siri has been given a complete overhaul on iOS 7 and  a lot more functions have been included. One of these is the ability to control your system toggles. Simply launch Siri by long pressing on the home button and give your command – i.e. Turn Bluetooth on/off. You can do this for any system toggle.

Swipe to go back a screen

Instead of messing around pressing the Back button on a display you can simply swipe across the screen to go back a page. This will work in virtually all of the native apps. For example, in Messages, swipe the top left corner to the right to go back to your messages list.

Take Square Photos

Fed up with “ordinary” photos? A new feature in the camera app lets you take square photos. Open the Camera app and swipe right to activate Square mode. You can also keep swiping to take Panorama photos and launch Video mode.

Background Refresh

If you use one or two apps more than most, you might find it time-consuming to have to keep refreshing it. iOS 7 changes that:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap General
  3. Tap Background Refreshapp background refresh ios 7
  4. Choose the apps you want to automatically refresh in the background.

Be choosy about how many you enable because this feature is a bit of a battery hog.

Set Panorama Photos as Wallpaper

If you have a favorite panorama photo, iOS 7 lets you set it as your wallpaper on your lock screen. For an even better effect, enable Parallax – see number 2

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Wallpaper and Brightness panorama wallpaper (2)
  3. Choose your wallpaper and set it for lock screen

Set your Compass App as  Spirit Level Bubble

If you want something different from the native Compass App, after setting it up swipe right on the screen. You will now see a new screen that lets you set it up as a bubble level.

Use Siri for Updates from your Favorite Websites

Siri is now able to show you updates from your favorite websites. For example, if you want to know what is happening on JailbreakModo.com , open Siri and say “What is JailbreakModo saying?” You will be shown all of the latest updates on one screen.

Enable or Disable the Control Center

If you don’t want access to the Control Center on the lock screen or keep accidentally bringing it up while you are in an app you can disable access to it. You can easily enable it again when you want it:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Open Control Center control centre ios 7
  3. Tap to enable or disable it in Lock screen or in Apps or in both if you prefer. ios 7 lockscreen control centre  (2)

Enable or Disable Automatic App Updates

Instead of you having to go into the App store and updating your apps manually, iOS 7 now does it automatically. However, if you don’t want this you can turn it off:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap iTunes and App Store
  3. Go to the Automatic Downloads section and tap to turn Automatic Updates off or onitunes and app store updates

Have as many apps as you want in folders

Previous versions of iOS limited you to 12 apps per folder. iOS 7 changes all that by letting you store as many as you like in each one. ios7 folders iphone 5

Turn Ad Tracking on or off

iOS 7 allows each device to be tracked to show specific ads on ad-supported apps. You can turn this off:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Privacy

See all Media Messages In one Spot in the Message App

If you have been sent a lot of video or image by one person it can be difficult to tack it down again, especially if you have a long conversation thread going. Just tap on the last image or file your received and Tap on List View – all your media messages can now be seen together.

Dynamic Wallpapers

One new feature in iOS 7 is support for dynamic or animated wallpaper. To set this up:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Wallpaper and Brightness
  3. Tap Choose Wallpaper
  4. Tap Dynamic and select the one you want.choose wallpaper ios 7
